Diablo is extremely well-placed to make this happen. As my friend Maddy Myers pointed out, these games that focus on loot have always had the feel of a slot machine that Diablo Immortal's business model makes sense.



Blizzard has taken pains to highlight that the monetization of Immortal can be ignored till the end of the game and it's true and it claims that the majority of players are enjoying playing without spending anything, which is plausible. It's untrue to say that the real pleasure of Diablo games resides in playing through the story, instead of maxing out your character. It would be just as absurd to claim that these games have always been designed to instill an urge to reach the power limit in the players. For people with a tendency toward addiction to gambling, to the addictive aspects of Diablo's item games -- or, even worse, both -- the famous crest system is exploitative and, in the worst case, very destructive.



For those who don't, it simply makes Diablo more difficult to play.



We've been here before and we've been there before, or at least somewhere similar to it. When Diablo 3 launched in 2012 an auction house in real-money where players could purchase and sell their items. In theory, it was there to head off the cheating and scamming that beset the trading of items in Diablo 2. However cheap Diablo 4 Gold, to guide players to an auction house Blizzard reduced the drop rate of loot in the game to such an extent that equipping your character was a tedious task and the game as a whole felt unrewarding to play. The auction house that was a snobbery was taken down and drop rate were raised in 2014, Diablo 3 instantly became more enjoyable, and that was before the improvements of the Reaper of Souls expansion brought it to the status of a classic.
